We catch lots of barracuda (and some edible fish) using frozen ballyhoo for bait. Here's a live one, about a foot long.
A couple of barracuda lurking off Nipper's, a popular beachfront bar & grill.
Another one lurking beside the marina dock at Man-O-Way Cay.
This one is at the surface, done fighting, but still ready to bite!
They invariably appear angry when seen close up.
Clipping the leader off without getting bitten can be tricky. After a couple of gashes on my fingers, I've learned to keep the big ones at arm's length with a gaff.
If you live by the law of the jungle, you may die by the law of the jungle. Here's the head of a barracuda, the rest of which was consumed by something larger as Troop 59 of Hightstown NJ reeled him in.
The ones that make it to the boat whole get to sport a lip piercing for a few weeks, until the hook rusts away, and they can fight again!
